It’s Syd Barrett’s birthday today and, as most of you know, I am a massive fan of the early Pink Floyd and Syd’s two solo albums. And it is my tradition on this blog to post something Syd-related on his birthday. “Flaming” is one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs and for a while now I had this idea of posting the song’s lyrics alongside with the appropriate paintings or pictures because the lyrics are so vivid and full of whimsical, childlike imagery which instantly bring images to my mind and makes me daydream of some fairy tale land of flowers and clouds.

But I can you.

Too much, I won’t touch you
But then I might.
I recall a story about the stumbling Pink Floyd as Syd began fading from the band. His bandmates were complaining to Syd about his no-shows, late-shows and non-participation generally and he responded: “And how is that a problem for me?”

What a lovely tribute to one of life’s genuine originals. My favourite Syd line is “In dolls’ house darkness/ Old perfume”. Jean-Arthur Rimbaud would have been proud of an image like that.

I LOVE that line as well! It conjures such lovely images in my mind, it’s like a whole story in two lines, so vivid and evocative, brings to mind memories…

Yes, it was part of Syd’s genius that he could create vast mysterious images with just a few words.
