London Streetstyle: Edwardian vs Swinging Sixties

17 Jun

I’ve been quite fascinated with some London street style photographs from the Edwardian era and that made me think about the parallel between those fashion pics and the Swinging Sixties fashion which I love so much.

For some reason the Edwardian “Street Photography” photos you present here seem less posed yet also well-shot compared to most I seem to have encountered. The women’s fashions seem quite different to me, but the faces less so. If anything, the Edwardian shots give the impression of an authentic moment in time that we know only this one image about–but that image/moment is less than we knew before we saw the photo.

You are quite right in your observations. These pictures from the Edwardian era are a breath of fresh air compared to other photographs from the era; they look so modern, so carefree, makes you feel they were shot yesterday.

I think it all looks lovely! I love seeing original prints, fashion plates, patterns etc. My favourite fashion period are the 1840s, which I didn’t see on your site. But I am interested in later fashions as well, crinoline era is so exuberant.
